We heard earlier this week about the untimely death of Nigel Johnson, a forward who played for the Club at the end of the 1970s and early 80s.  He is sitting first left on the attached 1979 team picture which comes from the website archives and just look at some of his contemporaries, including the likes of Cordice, Bowgett, Barwick, Watson and of course Stuart Pearce.

This period marked the time that I first started watching the Club on a regular basis so I have good memories of Nigel Johnson and our thoughts go to his family and friends.

Disappointed to have to report that Jomo Faal Thomas has signed for Conference South side St Albans City.

St Albans were one of many clubs who have watched Jomo in recent weeks.  They recently put in a 7 day notice of approach for the player although after we spent some time talking with the player and his agent over the last few days we believed that Jomo would stay with us and not go to St Albans but now he has decided that he wants to go – a decision we have to accept.

I want to make it clear that when a player is not on a contract we are fairly powerless in these circumstances.  We would have happily put Jomo on a contract but the player would not sign one.  We also felt that this was not necessarily the right move for him (no disrespect to St Albans) as he has had football league clubs watching him and keen to take him on trial but he and his agent eventually decided differently – and interestingly (for once) money doesn’t seem to be the decider.

Jomo is only 19 and has a bright future in the game.  He has made a positive impression on all of us this season, we thank him for his contribution and we wish him every success in the future.
