Tomorrow evening we have an important meeting with Stanmore College to agree the budget for this year’s Scholarship Scheme. Unfortunately I cannot be at the meeting as I will be working away in Cheshire until Wednesday.
The Stanmore scheme has been important to us over the past few years with many decent players coming through into the first team, including Jermaine, Marvin and Carl Martin to name but three. Speaking to the Stanmore coaches at the end of our last meeting there last month it was clear they are very excited about the new crop of students due to join them this coming season. They consider them potentially the best group of recent years – if not ever.
Much of this is down to the work of John Moran, who has done a fantastic job going around local youth clubs and schools selling them the benefits of the scholarship programme, getting the best players interested and then involved.
As with all things Wealdstone nothing ever runs too smoothly and government changes to qualifications generally mean Stanmore face funding issues of their own so there is pressure on the Scholarship budget. Hopefully this will be worked out tomorrow evening. Let’s hope it does because we need to continue to develop young talent; and we have the best set of coaches and processes in place to really see some benefits in the coming years.
